Crime Stories Review

So I’ve read all the previous reviews and can agree with people that the dialogue has some issues from time to time. I’m guessing like everyone else that’s because it was translated from another language, but honestly it is not so bad you can’t understand it, plus it’s pretty funny from time to time, but not all that bad at all. I love games like this where you have to do one thing in order to do another and find clues, run back and forth, search crime scenes, question people, etc. etc. So this game was definitely right up my alley and I LOVED it!!!! It’s a perfect combination between challenging, but not too hard so that you get frustrated. I am obssessed with the Nancy Drew series so someone gave me this one for Christmas while I waited for another new ND and it was certainly a great gift.

My ONLY real complaint about it is I like games that have a logical conclusion. I’m fine with the supernatural stuff and ghost stories and creepy atmospheres and rumors of hauntings and things of that nature throughout the game, but ultimately it ends up being someone behind all of it and there’s a logical plausible conclusion…not in this game however. I won’t spoil the ending by any means, but it’s something so far-fetched and obviously unrealistic that it made it hard for me to get excited about having solved it. I was expecting something different in the end, but otherwise the game itself was GREAT and I would highly recommend it so long as you don’t mind a very crazy and unrealistic ending.

Also a side note….for everyone who said they wish you were only able to click on the items and clues you needed then what fun would that be?? You’d just move your mouse around and the two things that lit up were exactly what you were looking for and you’d be done. The game would be over within the hour at that rate. I like having to work a little bit to find what you want. Plus they don’t just throw you out there with nothing, even though you can click on a bunch of useless items it’s still fun to snoop through people’s things and they DO steer you toward your goal and what you’re hunting for so you aren’t completely lost. I will say though that if you’ve never played a game like this the controls and movements and inventory list, etc. does take a little getting used to, but you’ll have it figured out in ten minutes tops. Best of luck to everyone and I think this game is fantastic!

Another low-blow in the adventure genre – Mark W. Dickson – Dorchester, MA USA
I love adventure games so much so that I have a whole shelf of them which I haven’t even had time to play yet. I picked this one out and played it in two short sittings. The story line was generally weak, it felt very similar to Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (which is a fantastic game and dwarfs this one by comparison).

The gameplay is very clunky. Lots of objects to look at, probably only 10% of which have any bearing on the story-line or any interactivity. The puzzles don’t seem very logical to me. Even with the walkthrough I couldn’t imagine how someone would reach some conclusions from the hints given. Many pieces seemed more like trail and error than finding clues. There are a few places where I had a hard time finding the right object to click even with a walkthrough (which had to post pictures of the places to click because they were so small and non-descript).

The characters are lacking in depth both from lack of personality development and bad voice acting. This story didn’t suck me in like Syberia and Myst.

The animation was completely lacking, character mouth movements didn’t even try to match the dialogue. Voice acting was novice at best combined with the disjointed sentences allowing for players to click through speech. There was no spoken language while investigating objects, only for the major plot-points. The characters walk too slow and never directly interact with objects. Rather than showing animated interactions, the screen would fade to black and then fade back in with the action completed. All of the characters have generally three animations, walk, talk and pick up.

Overall I give this game a 2-star rating only because I have played worse and there were no show-stopping bugs in this game unlike others. If you are really bored, might as well waste an afternoon on this game. However, if you have others to play, consider them first.

Not as Bad As You Might Think – Timothy Branik – Whittier,
I played this game in about 7 hours one night, I used a walkthrough so as to get through it as fast as possible as I am limited in time. Threrefore, I might have enjoyed it more than most of you that seem to have not used a walkthrough. I also play most all adventure games out there and this one in comparison is about average. Sure the dialog did not match up to the subtitles, but that just made me laugh not a huge concern. The graphics did seem a bit dated, but I also imagine this was a small company that originally made this game, so once again no problem. I thought the story was pretty good and interesting and since i only paid like 5.00 for the game maybe I am over-rating it, but who knows. The only way you’re gonna know if this game is for you is to play it yourself. I have spelled out everything I thought about the game. What others failed to mention is that this game played flawlessly out of the box, no bugs like many big-budget games have, so at least give it that much. Is this game a 5?..no..a 1? no, but definitely a solid 3. But hey, what do I know? I also really liked Next Life.

Terrible – L-J –
This is a terrible game. I didn’t get very far in it because i found it truly frustrating and annoying. The graphics are good, yes, but the main character isn’t worth it. He is so stupid and annoying! I realize that he’s only a computer character, and you have to control him, but in the beginning of the game, he needs to find a phone number. So I found the first half of the number on one piece of paper, and the second half on another piece. When i told him to dial the phone number he said somehting like, “Why would I call that number?” and he just would not call. It gets very aggravating!
Also, it is a point-and-click game, so you can pretty much click on everything around the character, even if it has no significance to the story…And of course he has to comment on it and tell you the item’s backstory! Also very annoying.
I didn’t even get past the first part of the game, so maybe I’m being a bit harsh, but I felt so flustered by this game that I just gave up…and I am not a person who gives up very easily.
I do not think that this game is worth the money at all.
